The Chevelle was still offered in three trims called 300, 300 Deluxe, and Malibu, and the last remained the top-of-the-line configuration.
The SS 396 was the icing on the cake, sporting a big-block engine producing 375 horsepower. One of these examples is here, looking for a new home after over four decades in storage.
eBay seller tandtsquare explains in a recent listing that the car is unrestored and unaltered, though they do claim that the Chevelle was repainted once and received aftermarket speakers at one point. Otherwise, this Chevelle is impressive, especially considering its age, flexing only 40K original miles.
The owner says the car still has everything from the factory, including the belts and radiator hoses, so you’d better have it gone through before taking the car on a long journey. The carburetor is still original, but the most impressive part is how good it starts and runs, even after all these years.
The car has been sitting for so long that you wouldn’t expect the engine to work, but the owner says it “runs and drives like a 40K-mile car would.” The transmission also shifts properly, and all components are operational.
A car sitting four decades in storage typically comes with rust and other metal issues, but the owner says this isn’t the case this time. The Chevelle looks solid, and it doesn’t exhibit any major body damage or rust. It’s been properly cared for throughout all these years, and the owner even has the original wheels with new Goodyear tires from 1982. These tires have never been used.
The Chevelle does require some attention here and there, but it’s still a solid example of the 1968 model year, and considering it sports the SS tags, it’s even more desirable for someone planning to keep it as original as possible.
The selling price is unsurprising, as a 1968 Chevelle SS 396 in original and unaltered condition is rare. The owner wants $52,500 for the car, so it will be interesting to see how fast it sells. The auction site indicates that 22 people have already added it to their watchlists, so if you want to get your hands on this Chevelle, you might have to deal with fierce competition.
The listing will expire in late October, so you have enough time to inspect the car in person and make an offer to take it home. It’s parked in Cincinnati, Ohio.
