Dealer Sells Rare Unrestored 1970 Pontiac Trans Am, Factory Surprise Under the Car

The Trans Am was still in its early days in 1970, with Pontiac producing only 3,196 units for this model year. The base Firebird and the Esprit dominated this year with 18,874 and 18,961 units, respectively, followed by the Formula in third place with 7,708 units.
The Trans Am could be had with the Ram Air III and IV packages, and the latter eventually became rare, especially with automatic transmission.

Pontiac produced only 88 LS1-fitted Trans Ams, and 29 of them left the factory with an automatic transmission. The L74 was more common but still fairly rare, as Pontiac produced only 3,108 units. The manual gearbox was installed on only 1,769 cars.

One of them is here, trying to find a new home thanks to Throttlestop.

The dealer posted the car on eBay, explaining that it’s a Southern car that has been properly cared for and is now flexing a survivor-grade package. However, as you can see in the photos, it still requires only subtle TLC, though I’d say that this car’s place is in a heated garage next to other classics.

The Trans Am is mostly original, still wearing the correct Lucerne Blue (factory code 26) paint in beautiful shape. It’s not the factory-sprayed coat of paint, as this Trans Am wears an older repaint.

While the car’s condition is obvious, the undercarriage wears the original Red Oxide Primer. The car is still very solid underneath, and the original floors push it closer to the “time capsule” condition.

The engine under the hood is the 400ci V8 engine with the Ram Air III, and despite no such specifics being shared on eBay, it’s safe to assume that it starts and runs correctly. The car sells with PHS documentation, the original factory door edge guards, and other goodies that try to justify the selling price. We’ll get there in a few seconds, as I must highlight one last major selling point – the car has only 25K miles, and it’s believed this is the accurate mileage.

The dealer won’t let the Trans Am go cheaply, as they expect the car to go for approximately $78,000. This is an ambitious expectation, but the dealer also enabled the Make Offer button, so interested buyers can send other offers by the time the listing expires in three days.

The auction site reveals that close to 60 people have already added this Trans Am to their watchlists, but it’s unclear if anyone has already started the takeover talks. I don’t expect this Trans Am to remain available for long, though it all comes down to the price, so it’ll be interesting to see how long it takes for the car to find a new home.

The vehicle is parked in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, and you won’t need a trailer to take it home.
